There are a ton of people that do use a standalone version of oracle. There are people that do use SQL Server and me personally I use postgresql. I started with mysql way back when I first found PHPNuke but through work I found that other engines were better (back then at least). Back when mysql didn't support transactions natively and would allow you to insert null values into columns defined as not null.

I worked in an industry that made it infeasible to operate with mysql so I made the switch and ended up being very happy with it. As a command line linux user the interface for postgresql appealed to me. I now disable mysql on all systems I build just out of habit and refuse to touch stuff that doesn't have some sort of db layering involved.

Its funny since this is free it has to be more supportive of everything where if it was a licensed software I would have no care in it being locked to a platform.
