In the past month my forum has been getting slammed with spam. I ban around 25-35 spammers each day.

I was wondering if there is a way to make phpbb work similar to the yuku forums where it allows people to register but doesn't allow them to post until they send a message to he moderator.

Basically I would like it to do this:

1. Allow the user to register on the site as it does on phpnuke/phpbb currently.
2. If the user has not posted before it gives a message to them when they click on new post or reply that says something similar to what yuku's boards say: "In order to gain access to this board you must apply for membership first. We like to learn about all of our potential members beforehand to ensure that our discussions are thoughtful, lively and spam free. If you are interested in becoming a member of this board, please click the button "Apply for Membership" and you will be contacted via email whether or not your application was accepted."

You can always set up for Admin access only. Go to your phpBB forum administration menu. Select Configuration under General Admin. Then, look for "Enable account activation" and set it to Admin.

Also, you can enable the graphic security code in your config.php file to prevent bots from spamming your site.

I have not had a single spam in my forum in 2 years after I installed bbantispam or Advanced Textual Confirmation. Guests are allowed to post in my forum. It is best to put the installation code in config.php, because then all type of spam in PHP-Nuke is stopped. bbantispam introduces a question that must be answered correct, but only once.

Hi. I set the "Enable account activation" to Admin. Does anyone know if that means I will receive emails letting me know someone wants to sign up and I click the link or something?

Update... Even with my phpbb "Enable account activation" sent to Admin, spammers are still signing up and posting. I am receiving no activation notices even with Admin checked. Has this happened to anyone else?

phpNuke does not use the "account activation" through phpBB. You'll want Approve Membership mod
