Changes in Europe, very important, please read
General Newsbigsi writes " On September 1st the European Commission is going to vote a revised version of the European Patentability rules. The proposed revision contains a set of serious challenges to Open Source development since regulation regarding software patents will be broadly extended and might forbid independent development of innovative (Open Source and not) software-based solutions.

The European Open Source community is very concerned about the upcoming new regulation and has organized a demo protest for August 27, asking Open Source supporting sites to change their home pages to let everyone know what is going on at the European Parliament.

For further information please see http://swpat.ffii.org and http://petition.eurolinux.org."

Is European governments smoking crack? Just curious. For them to make this consideration, leads me to believe that European interests are not their priority.

What I forsee to this is stiffling and excluding the European I.T. development. The rest of the world will simply IGNORE this bullcrap and move forward whereas Europeans will not pursue noe even be encouraged to progress.

So again, I ask, is European governments smoking MORE crack than they have been lately? Or is it that they feel they cannot compete with the rest of the world in I.T. development? Because that is the message they are sending out, and I completely disagree.

In fact, I find Europe to be one of the strongest I.T. communities in the world. Eh, it's got to be crack, NO wait! Heroin! Yea, isn't that legal to smoke in Holland?

Just a dumb decision to make this regulation.

I advise you guys in Europe, to tell your crack smoking Commission to "Drop Dead" and continue on your course because this world, and especially the I.T. community, works a hell of alot better as a HUMAN RACE than as a splintered group each working in different directions.

To be honest, since the European community many things have been changed, some good some bad. Unfortunately, with so many different cultures being expressed in the European Parliment, with so many people looking for themselves and not doing the best for the COMMUNITY, we are, sadly, plagued by Bureaucrats. We even have regulation on the size of fruit that has to be sold in the shops. But my request is this....

Anyone living and working within the European Community, please contact your local Government representative, and express your rejection of this move. If, like it states, it will prevent the independant development of applications, the Open Source Community in Europe might be gravely effected.
