I don't think you need to worry about trademarks on the term passport. What I would be worrying about is any patents that Microsoft has rather than trademarks.

I think it's a great idea.

It would interesting to also see if anyone wants to incorporate Microsoft .Net Passport technology into PHPNuke to give people more choice. However I understand at the moment, one has to be running a Windows server for that....I don't know how Microsoft would take it if people started running Windows servers to authenticate for Linux servers....I dare say they might try and put a stop to that.

No, it is appreciated. Some of those issues are already on my mind and are going to be in the forefront of the peoject planning, however, the one I didn't really give alot of consideration to, was the Microsoft law suits.

To be honest, I don't think they would win a lawsuit about the word passport, simply because it is an everyday word used exactly for this purpose, to provide a passport exactly in the sense that a regular passport provides entrance into different countries.

That being said, I don't exactly have the resources (say 50 billion in cash on hand) to fight something of that nature very effectively, no matter if I feel I am right or not.

I think that is one of those things I am just going to have to come to when the situation pops up. Worse comes to worse, there would be MAJOR news coverage, not only exposing the service and site, but also once I have to change the name to something relatively different.

Either way, I win.

Thanks for taking the time for posting the thoughts, all opinions, for or against, and any concerns, please communicate them. This is going to be a great resource for the entire community on a whole, and I want to make it the best possible.
