(User Info | Send a Message) http://insinuendo.org | TrackBack is "a framework for peer-to-peer communication and notifications between web sites" (from the trackback specification).
Essentially, it is a way for websites to communicate with each other about related content. If I have an article on my site which is referenced by several other sites, then visitors to my site will be able to instantaneously see/access the related content on those other sites.
It is a protocol that was developed for bloggers using MovableType to be able to refer to other blog's content in a way that is different than merely "commenting" on an article.
