(User Info | Send a Message) http://www.pokeradio.com/ | | sure. infact. since my site doesnt get much traffic as it is, i already have a plan B set up that if for any reason something like this happens or simply the host goes down, i take the site backups and load them up on the server right here on my own comp and use it as a backup server. and ive already tested and visitors have reported that they get pretty muh the same load times on the backup server as the main server. so ive got the whole ting planned out. :D |

About a year ago, I was listening to 'talk radio' and they were interviewing some poor author that had been trying to sell his works on the Internet, from his website - e-books, or whatever. Things weren't going so well, so he thought, "I'll give away one novel for free. That way, I can generate some interest in the others", blah, blah, blah...
A couple of days later, he checked his web site account and found out that he had accrued $75,000 in excessive bandwidth overcharges. He contacted his webhost and had them shut the site down, but it was too late. As it turned out, he had to take out a second mortgage on his house, sell his possessions, and all that sort of stuff, to keep out of bankruptcy, all because he got file raped for two days...
I have been very aware of this situation since then. Luckily, if such a thing was to happen to me, with the account I have now, at 45GB the site goes down automatically, and waits for me to purchase additional bandwidth - and that's fine with me!
Hopefully, everyone will learn from this... |

(User Info | Send a Message) | | OMG... my hosting company would shutdown my website and probably suspend my account. A ddos attack for any given client would be too risky for their business. As the military put it, kill one of the soldiers to save the other 10,000 troops. |

I've worked out stuff with my host about DDoS attacks, and my site would immediately be removed from the server until the upstream filters the attack. |

Although, I dont know how the server would handle it though. |

(User Info | Send a Message) | It's tested live, by making five other computers bomb it by a constant stream of packages, on a 100 MB internal network.
After three days, I stopped because I was afraid that the logs would fill the harddisks.
I just LOVE the 2.6 Linux kernel! (ps.: Hardware: A old 100MHz Pentium with ~50 MB RAM) |
