I have Protector on my sites, but not sure if it is advised to keep it or switch to another security because the Protector site has been down for quite some time and there is probably a need to have upgrades.
I could really use and appreciate some advice on this
Thank You

Hi Evaders99
With new ways to hack, and new PHPnuke vulnerabilities arising, I would believe that a security system would have to be updated to maintain the highest degree of protection, I am not sure if this is correct? or is it enough to just have the most current patches?
Thank You!

These aren't really new ways to hack, just the same old script kiddies finding different vulnerabilities, albeit the same kind of vulnerabilities. It is hard to find them all, especially in such untested code as FB puts out.
Protector should still be fine, I believe the filters should help you against a wide range of hacks. But you should still always run the latest Patches. Two lines of defense - the patches + a security addon. That will go a long way to keeping your site secured. |

Thank you Evaders99!
Ok... if I could ask one more question before you start charging me
On one of my sites when I go to the Forums Admin CP, it states:
Version Information
Powered by phpBB 2.0.17 © 2001-2003 phpBB Group
but on my other site when I go to the Forums Admin CP, it does not have the Version Information
Is there a way that I could find out what version I have on this site?
As I had someone else upgrade my sites, about 2 months ago, is there a way to find out what was the last patch that was added?
Thank You Again

Your forums template just had to be updated to show it, check the template's admin/page_footer.tpl
Well, if you are using the 3.1 Patches, it should say in mainfile.php |
Thank You Evaders99 - You are the BEST!
Both sites state that they are 3.1 Patched in the mainfile.php.... so I feel much better about that!!
My only concern now is if the one site is running 2.0.17 because it does not state that in the admin cp version nor in the template's admin/page_footer.tpl
I don't know if there is another way to check it?
JoAnne ~
PS - I will be making a donation to your ESC site next week (payday) as you have been helping me since I started using PHPNuke and I truly appreciate it! |

Thank you
Well, the manual way to check is to go into your bbconfig table and look for the version number there.
If you want it displayed in the admin panel, copy a working admin/page_footer.tpl to the other template |

I copied the admin/page_footer.tpl file from the site that states 2.0.17 to the site that does not state any version and it did not make a difference, still no version # showed.
So I looked in the bbconfig table and it states that the version is 2.0.15, which means he never upgraded it after he told me he did.
I need to upgrade to 2.0.17 .... I have to go read up on how to do this |

I downloaded BBtoNuke2017 from Nuke Resources, but there are no upgrade instructions included.
After I upload all the files to their proper location on the server, not sure how to run the upgrade
.........probably just point my browser to upgrade16-17.php like I do with install, but again not sure about this.
Also I have read that Patched 3.1 contained 2.0.17, I don't know why the person doing my upgrade did not run the 2.0.17 when he ran the Patched 3.1.... strange, but after everything else I shouldn't be too surprised...
It is just as well that I learn to do these things myself and not rely on someone to do it for me |

ok..... pointed my browser to upgrade16-17.php and that worked.
Had a couple of errors when I went into the forums, which were conflicts with my theme, but I fixed them and it is working fine now
......except I am just now thinking that I should have upgraded 2.0.15 to 2.0.16 first and then did the 2.0.17 ..... geez.... how do I go back and correct that now |

Yes, that last one was correct.
Also, the latest 3.1 Patched files do contain BBToNuke 2.0.17 - it is probably that they forgot to run the upgrade script |
Thank You Again Evaders99!!
