If this is beyond a simple fix I am totally willing
to pay someone to correct the issue...
This site is a production site pulling over 300k hits a month.
Only a tiny percentage of my viewers use firefox thank God...
but still I really would like it to display ok in firefox...

The weird characters are there in IE also, it just doesn't know how to display them. There is something wrong on your end, but I don't even know where to start looking for the problem.
Does the problem go away when you change to a different theme?
