I am able to set up web downloads to a directory that is in my "web root" i.e. htdocs. However, to avoid having multiple file copies in different locations. I am trying to use a link the 1) exists in the web root, 2) the link points to an external directory outside the "web root"
-- The permissions are all the same as those int he "web root" (file system perms.) But the link is not access able from the web page.
This may be acting like trying to access a file outside the "web root" ....I tought the link would overcome this, but apperently I'm wrong.
--- I'm not too familiar with Apache configurations......can any one help here?

a file available on your web site can only be hosted from a directory that's on a web server - i.e. somewhere from your web root and it's subdirectories.
