Don't u just hate it when some company you've never heard of starts emailing you out of the blue with "exclusive offers" of any weird nature that they can think of, or some porno site starts to send you junk??

Well here's my solution.

I've set up my email server to catch the domain in the x-envelope on email messages to tell me where emails really come from, not where the email claims it's come from, and as a result, I've successfully had 3 web sites shut down.

This was done because spam is against the rules and regulations as defined by InterNIC which is the company who says what can and can't be done with domains.

I'm working on getting 2 more sites shut down wihtin the next week.

The way to do it is find out who hosts their domain. This will be a company like Register.com. You then email their abuse department and give them the domain of the company who've been emailing you all the junk, and remind of them of InterNIC's regulations. If they refuse to do anything (which is what's happening with one of the 2 sites I'm working on) saying that it's not their responsibility to police the internet bla bla bla bla bla, tell them that if you were to go to the "Proper authorities" they would be charged for "Aiding and Abetting" because you'd reported it to them which instantly MAKES it their responsibility.

To find out who hosts a domain, run a whois enquiry on InterNIC's web site.

let me just clarify what Spam is to those of you who haven't figured it out. Spam is unsolicited email. Unsolicited being that you either didn't subscribe to it, or have unsubscribed from it and are still receiving it.

It isn't just annoying, it's ILLEGAL.

I am less tollerant of spam than most people are, and I'm one of the few people I know of who actually go out to shut spamming sites down.

I would also like to point out that it is a Legal requirement for ALL emails of this nature (i.e. from a Mailing list) to have an unsubscribe facility. If none is provided, you can report them for that too.

The unsubscribe facility is normally either via a web link, or an email sent to an email address with UNSUBSCRIBE somewhere in the message, either in the address, subject or body of the message.

Also, it is recommended that you wait 72 hours (3 days) after unsubscribing before you report them. This is what is considered adequate time for a web site to remove you manually from their mailing lists.

Even sadder than all this is the fact that these people can give you a complex with what they send you, i mean, do you know just how many emails about breast (and other parts that'll remain undisclosed at the moment) enlargement products i get? This has scarred me so much i have even discarded all mirrors from my house. Embarassed

Rant and Rave #1: War against Spam

Reason: Converting ASP to PHP when I have no idea how to program in ASP to start with so I'm learning it on the fly (and learning that I don't actually like it as a scripting language on the fly too)

Other Reason: I HATE SPAM Mad Mad Mad Mad

I was kinda including those enlargement emails in the porno site bit.

The unfortunate side of this, especially if the spammer could care less about laws, is if you respond to an 'unsubscribe', your email is flagged as 'live'. This means there is actually someone who reads the email at your address, and it makes your email that much more VALUABLE to be re-sold to another spammer. Email lists are a huge multi-million dollar business, just buying and trading them... especially ones that are proven to be 'live'.

Interesting bit of info there Zhen, could that be somehow adapted to filter what comes through Outlook? that would be very helpful as even if i don't use my isp email addy much basically trying to avoid virii and spam i do get hit anyway through the website based emails, not even going to mention what i get through hotmail, up til now i have only dealt with this by blocking whatever domains i can using wildcards and by doing what Wizarium mentioned, i never hit a unsubscribe me link when i know i've never subscribed to them in the first place that's like telling them i'm here and i want you to hand out my email addy to as many spammers as you can.

I've been thinking about installing the apps on the server here to give it a test run. If it works well, I was even thinking of offering email services that block SPAM before you even download.

Kerio Mailserver has a gr8 filter, you just have to tell it to filter out certian domain names, or subjects, or addresses to etc.

Outlook XP also has a junk mail filter now, but it only works on a per-email-addy basis (it looks @ the sender's addy and if it matches what is in it's junk mail filter list, then it deletes it streight away)

I like my spam filter - me. If I see a message that's not from somebody I recognise, then it gets deleted, and it's email domain gets added to my junk filter on my server.

Ive tried all the filters, blah blah blah. After 10 years of this crap getting out of control, I created a software I use that will blast their own re-hacked junkmail right back to it's source AND Net Ops centers AND Domain registrars x10000 on its first launch, x20000 on its second launch and x30000 on its 3rd and final launch. It creates havoc on their servers, sucks up bandwidth and virtually destroys their ads when they use html.

Hehehehe. Yes I know it may affect others on the internet, but after one single attack i launch, I never ever get spam from those sources again even though my bombs have nothing attached identifying me. I put a page up of one such email: See It Here

Please Note: It is very vulgar with cursing AND take note of the broken images, they came off the spammers server. hehehehe.
Final Warning: DO NOT CLICK THE REMOVE BUTTON AT THE BOTTOM. If you do, your browser will crash from all the pop-ups that open.

I ahve been doing this for about 3 years now. Laughing
