If you've ever tried to add a story and noticed that nuke comes with ONE category in Topics... it's called Articles. Well if you don't want a new story posted on the home page you have to put it in a different category.
Seems there's been a bug for a while that every time you try to add a category it fails with "This Category already exists!". Well I fixed it. Posted in Bug fixes how you can fix yours as well.
So... what's it good for?
Well besides being able to have stories not posted to your home page, you could do something like this:
If your site centers around .... oh... let's say Security for.... Php-Nuke, PostNuke, Xoops, and other CMS ...
You can create a category (within Topics) for... Alerts and one for Patches for example. You have to have at least one story assigned to a category for what I'm about to describe...
Activate your Categories Menu block.
Now in that block you'll actually see categories. (Patches and Alerts)
Now if you click on Alerts (for example) you'll pull all of the stories from all of your topics that have the sub-category of Alerts.
Now this may not be the greatest example because maybe folks who have Php-Nuke don't give a rat's <derier> about any Alerts in Xoops topic. But you can see the implications of how it would work.
You might want to give topics their own categories:
Nuke-Alerts
Nuke-Patches
Nuke-News
and only use those categories within PhP-Nuke topic. Up to you how to use this.
Use your imagination.. you might come up with a really useful way to employ this feature.
