This problem has been driving me nuts for months! Here's my problem. I have a site that I would like to offer both dark and light themes but because I'm using GIF's with transparent backgrounds for my topic icons, the ones with a dark background look like crap on light themes and vice-versa.
If you place an additional set of "themed" topic icons in the ./themes/name_of_theme/images/topics/ folder then the themed topic icons will be displayed in the Topics module and this is GREAT! But, go back to the home page where the News articles are displayed - along with a topic icon and it gets pulled from the default ./images/topics/ folder and I no longer have themed icons - in my home page anyways.
I've tried this with Nuke 6.9 and 7.0 and both have the same results.
